Travel and required documents

Required documents and visa procedure

Upon entering Zanzibar, you will need a passport valid for at least another 6 months past your date of entry and a visa, to be bought at the airport or in port. For citizens of most EU countries the price of a three-month tourist visa equals 50 USD. US citizens pay 100 USD. This may be paid either in cash or by credit card. People entering Zanzibar from mainland Tanzania, e.g. after a safari or a Kilimanjaro climb are not required to buy another visa.
Since January 2019 it’ s possible to obtain an online visa https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa

The yellow book, i.e. your vaccination book, with a valid vaccination against yellow fever is not required from tourists flying in from out of Africa. If you have a connecting flight through Kenya or are coming from another African country, you will be asked to show yours.

Driver’s license

To rent a car on the island, you need a driver’s license and a local driving permit. The permit is usually obtained by businesses offering car rentals and costs around 10 USD.
Attention!
There is left-hand traffic on Zanzibar!

Getting there

By plane

With the growing popularity of Zanzibar, the number of air connections is growing, too. Flights from Europe to Dar es Salaam (DAR) in Tanzania, or directly to the Zanzibar island (ZNZ) are offered by Emirates Airlines, with a connection in Dubai; from there, you can get to Zanzibar with Flydubai.
Convenient connecting flights with a layover in Doha, both to Dar es Salaam and directly to Zanzibar, are also offered by Qatar Airways. You may also want to browse the schedules of Ethiopian Airlines, Turkish Airlines and KLM in cooperation with Kenya Airways.
Affordable direct charter flights are available from Brussels, Frankfurt, Warsaw and recently from Amsterdam. A direct one takes 8.5 hours; if you have a connecting flight, it may take the better part of the day.

Flights between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar are operated by local airlines, such as Precision Air, Auric Air and Coastal Aviation. The flight takes around 20 minutes.

By ferry from Dar es Salaam

You can also take a ferry from Dar es Salaam to the island. A fast one will take around 2 hours to get you there. One way ticket prices range from 35 USD in the economy class to 60 USD  in the Royal class. Tourists get offered the 50 USD VIP tickets by default.
